MENTAL HEALTH OUTREACH FOR PERSONS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
Purpose:
To provide outpatient mental health services for persons with cognitive developmental disabilities and/or mental retardation who are ineligible for or do not meet medical necessity criteria for services provided by the public mental health system. Some services are also provided to families and other caregivers.
Individuals Served:
Montgomery County children and adults who meet the foregoing criteria.
Program:
- Crisis prevention, assessment, and stabilization
- Home intervention
- Family or caretaker education
- Behavior management training
- Consultation to group homes, shelters, day treatment programs, foster care providers, or others providing services to the target population
- Continuing outpatient treatment for those with qualifying mental disorders
- Emergency support services
Learning Opportunities:
Clients and others have opportunities to learn about:
- Identifying mental health issues and how to manage them
- Learning how to cope with crises around housing, day treatment, or partial hospitalization
- Information about developmental disabilities and how to approach working with persons who have them
Hours of Operation:
This program operates during hours the mental health clinics are open, generally from 9 AM to 6 PM. After-hours crises are handled by ASG’s on-call system.

Staffing:
A director who is a mental health therapist with extensive experience in the provision of mental health services to those with developmental disabilities and co-occurring serious and persistent mental illness.
Location:
These services are located at the ASG multi-service center in Wheaton, MD.
